Seven years later, scientists from the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences found out the real sex of a white-cheeked goose ringed in Svalbard. Previously, the bird was mistakenly identified as a female.

A special color tag was put on the barracks in 2019 in Nu-Alessun. Ornithologists have repeatedly observed it during migration and during the nesting season. There was no doubt about the correctness of the definition of gender.

The error was discovered during the expedition of the Moscow Institute of Biological Sciences in May 2026, when the bird was spotted in Longyearbyen. The barrack guarded the female in the nest, which led to the conclusion that she was a male.

According to Bi-port, the information about the feathered bird in the database has been replaced with the correct one.

According to experts, similar errors occur when determining the sex of young birds. They have no pronounced external differences between the sexes.

Earlier it was reported that two bird watching platforms have appeared in the Teriberka Nature Park in the Murmansk Region. The objects were located in the bird market area.
