- The lawyer called the court's decision on Ukraine's lawsuit over the Crimean Bridge a victory for Russia
Lawyer Dmitry Agranovsky in an interview with aif.ru On Wednesday, June 17, he called the decision of the Hague Arbitration Court on Ukraine's claim regarding the Crimean Bridge a diplomatic and legal victory for Russia.
According to Agranovsky, the verdict turned out to be unexpectedly objective against the background of the general practice of international institutions. He noted that the satisfied requirements are formal in nature and will not have significant legal consequences for Russia.
"The most important thing is, of course, the status of the Kerch Strait, the status of the Sea of Azov as actually an inland sea. This decision does not oblige Russia to stop or change any legally significant actions. Ukraine will not receive any legal levers for Russia's sovereignty over these territories to be questioned. Ukraine, by appealing to this court, ran into trouble: now its position has been refuted, and Russia's position has been confirmed," Agranovsky concluded.
On June 15, the Hague Arbitration Court rejected most of Kiev's claims, including claims for compensation for the use of resources in the Crimean waters and the dismantling of the Crimean Bridge. As a result of the proceedings, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague rejected all accusations by the Ukrainian side of violations of the UN Conventions on the Law of the Sea, notes 360.ru . In particular, "any "compensation" and "reparations" from Russia for their use and the alleged "damage" were denied, the NSN notes.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Kiev's efforts to challenge Russia's sovereignty over Crimea have failed, writes RT. The ministry said that the Russian side was satisfied with the decision, and called it a defeat for Ukraine and the West in their "legal war" against Russia, the website reports. kp.ru .
In 2016, Ukraine accused Russia of violating its rights to use the marine areas and the continental shelf off the coast of Crimea. Moscow rejected these claims, pointing out that the peninsula became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum, IA Regnum reminds.
