- The media reported on the discussion in the United States about the introduction of a paid passage through Hormuz
Representatives of the administration of US President Donald Trump are discussing ideas for resuming the movement of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, including a plan providing for paid "VIP escort" by the Navy along this waterway. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 17.
"Accelerated passage accompanied by ships at the expense of the United States is being discussed — as if you get a VIP pass on your ship. It is assumed that a fee may be charged for expedited paperwork, possibly with military escort," one of the sources told the publication.
The authors of the material also noted that the main problem that the American leadership is trying to solve in the current period is to resume the flow of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Insurance companies refuse to take such a risk because the current traffic conditions in the water area do not comply with safety protocols.
On the same day, the Marine Traffic vessel monitoring service reported that ship activity in the Strait of Hormuz remains low, despite negotiations between the United States and Iran. It is noted that a total of five confirmed crossings were recorded out of 15, mainly low-risk transits, moderate activity of the shadow fleet and three commercial flights with DPP ("delivery with payment of duties") and steel cargoes.
On the evening of June 15, American leader Donald Trump announced the partial unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. He specified that this water area will become fully accessible by Friday, June 19, the day when the American and Iranian sides will officially sign the memorandum in Switzerland.
