The expert announced fines for improper disposal of batteries

Used batteries should not be thrown away with ordinary garbage — this not only harms the environment, but can also result in a fine. Evgeny Zhuchkov, technical expert of the NANFU brand, told Izvestia on June 20 about why used batteries require special treatment, what penalties are provided for improper disposal and where batteries can be deposited.

"A battery consists of several key elements: an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte, and a protective housing. Various metals and chemicals are used for production, including zinc, manganese dioxide and alkaline solutions. That is why it is important not to send spent batteries to a landfill, but to transfer them to specialized recycling," the expert explained.

In addition to environmental risks, improper disposal can also lead to legal consequences. 8.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, the discharge of batteries into a common dumpster may result in a fine for citizens in the amount of 2 thousand to 3 thousand rubles. In case of repeated violation, the amount increases to 5-7 thousand rubles. For legal entities, the sanctions are much stricter: fines can reach 250 thousand rubles, and for repeated violations — 400 thousand rubles. In addition, companies risk administrative suspension for up to 90 days.

According to Zhuchkov, management companies can organize the collection of such waste. According to the legislation, they are required to ensure the accumulation of waste of hazard classes I–IV, which include batteries. If there is no appropriate infrastructure in the house, residents have the right to initiate its creation through a collective appeal or file a complaint with the housing inspectorate.

After delivery, the batteries are sent to specialized enterprises, where they are sorted by chemical composition. The batteries are then crushed and separated into separate components. The metal parts are sent for remelting, and the substances contained inside are extracted for further industrial use. Modern technologies make it possible to recycle up to 95% of the materials contained in batteries.

According to the expert, proper disposal allows not only to avoid fines, but also to return valuable materials to the production cycle, reduce the burden on the environment and reduce the amount of hazardous waste in landfills.

In an interview with Izvestia on January 23, environmentalist and hydrogeologist Zhora Kavanosyan spoke about everyday habits that harm the environment.
