Hungary has limited the terms of office of prime ministers

The Hungarian parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that limits the terms of office of prime ministers to two four-year periods. This measure deprives former leader Viktor Orban of the opportunity to return to power. This was reported by Bloomberg on June 15.

"On Monday, parliament approved a constitutional amendment that will limit the terms of office of prime ministers to two four-year periods and deprive Orban of the opportunity to return to power. He held this post for five terms, including four consecutive terms since 2010," the publication says.

It is clarified that the amendment became one of the main election promises of Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who won the election in April. He previously announced his intention to stop the authoritarian decline in Hungary and return the country to the mainstream of the European Union.

Magyar said at a press conference on June 13 that the former authorities were allegedly preparing to let hundreds of thousands of migrants into the country, although they publicly opposed this. According to the prime minister, the previous authorities began building a refugee camp near the border with Austria, planned to allocate millions of euros and create a "filtration zone," but abandoned this idea under pressure from local residents.
