Russia and Laos sign agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atom
On June 15, Russia and Laos signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atom. The relevant document was signed by Alexey Likhachev, Head of Rosatom, and Malaythong Commacit, Minister of Industry and Trade of Laos, at the Government House of the Russian Federation.
"We have been negotiating with our Laotian partners for several years, but over the past year, from mid-2025 to today, Laos' interest in nuclear energy has grown dramatically," Interfax quoted Likhachev as saying.
The head of Rosatom added that of all the areas of cooperation with Laos, the project for the deployment of small onshore nuclear power using RITM-200 reactors is of the greatest interest. According to him, the installation of such reactors can be implemented by the 2030s.
The signing took place in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both countries, Mikhail Mishustin and Sonsai Siphandon. During the talks with his Laotian colleagues, the head of the Russian government stressed the importance of creating favorable conditions for the implementation of joint projects in various fields. He noted the potential for cooperation in industry, energy, including peaceful atom, transport infrastructure and agriculture.
"Our interstate cooperation with Laos is based on the principles of friendship, mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests. Last year we celebrated the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. We are actively working through the governments to implement the agreements that were reached at the highest level," Mishustin said.
In December last year, Likhachev noted that Laos is interested in small nuclear power plants, as well as non-energy applications. Among them: nuclear medicine, cancer control, agricultural work. At the same time, Russian Ambassador Sergey Hardy announced preparations for cooperation between the countries in the field of peaceful atom.
