A large-scale renovation of the tram fleet has been completed in Moscow

The program of updating the tram fleet has been fully completed in the capital. In recent years, more than 600 new-generation railcars have been put on the line, providing transportation on all 36 tram routes in Moscow. This was announced by the mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, in his channel in Maks.

"We recently completed a multi-year project to upgrade the rolling stock of trams. Since 2017, 464 Vityaz-Moscow three-section cars and 140 Lvenok-Moscow single-section cars have been on the line. Today, more than 600 new-generation trams run along Moscow streets. Thus, the comfort of travel is ensured for passengers of all 36 tram routes in Moscow," said the mayor of the capital.

The new trams were commissioned by the Moscow government and designed specifically for use in the capital. All wagons are made in Russia — their production is organized in Engels, Saratov region, Tver and St. Petersburg.

The new generation trams have a low floor level, which makes them convenient for the elderly, parents with baby strollers and passengers with limited mobility. The salons have places for strollers and bicycles, USB connectors for charging gadgets, climate control systems and media screens with route information and city news.

The new rolling stock also has a larger capacity. The Vityaz-Moscow tram can carry up to 170 passengers, and the Lion Cub-Moscow can carry up to 110 people.

At the same time, all the "Lion Cubs-Moscow" and part of the "Knights-Moscow" are equipped with an autonomous running system. In total, 120 wagons capable of traveling more than four kilometers without a contact network have this function.

"Thanks to this innovation, we were able to open two Moscow tram diameters — the first routes in modern history that connect opposite districts. And at the same time, do not overload the central streets of Moscow with wires once again," Sergei Sobyanin added.
