To monitor the sky and intercept Ukrainian drones, Russian military personnel in the area of the special operation (SVO) are organizing air surveillance posts, where specially trained soldiers are on patrol. On June 15, Izvestia was told about this by the commander of the anti-aircraft crew with the call sign Yakut.
"Aerial surveillance posts are a necessity today. Any position, any unit has its own fighter, who is exclusively engaged in monitoring the sky for the activity of enemy drones. Special memos have even been created for them, thanks to which it is possible to identify an enemy drone," said Izvestia correspondent Egor Kildibekov.
Yakut was able to destroy one of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in the area of the Russian troops on the evening of May 29. As the fighter noted, the enemy drone flew "right over his head." After hitting the target, it went another 400 m, after which it fell into a quarry and detonated.
"His warhead can be even 50 kg, once loaded. If he had achieved his goal, <...> the two—story house would definitely have been torn apart," Yakut said.
Some enemy UAVs can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h at the time of the attack, the fighter noted. High speed forces the air defense teams to fire ahead of time so that the ammunition can hit the drone.
"The slower he flies, the less I take the lead," explained the commander of the anti—aircraft crew.
Russian fighters receive special training to counter enemy drones. After completing the training, they can be assigned to both mobile firing groups (MOG) and stationary positions.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported a day earlier that the Russian military, using Geran drones, attacked the drone control center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near the settlement of Novogrishino in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). The ministry published footage showing how a Russian UAV flies and hits the control point of unmanned aerial vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
