Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin congratulated the residents of the capital on Russia Day. He published an appeal to the townspeople in the Maks messenger.

"This holiday unites all citizens of our great country. We are proud of its centuries-old history and modern achievements. And we firmly believe in successfully overcoming any challenges," Sobyanin wrote.

According to the mayor, Moscow has long played a key role in the formation and strengthening of Russian statehood. He noted that today the capital is the center of the political, economic, social, cultural and spiritual life of the country.

Sobyanin also stressed that Moscow makes a significant contribution to the protection of Russia's sovereignty and development.

The mayor wished Muscovites good health, prosperity and new achievements.

Russia Day is a public holiday and a day off for the whole country. Until 2002, it was called the Day of the Adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR, which was signed in 1990. Since 1992, the holiday has been celebrated on June 12.
