Drug lord Guzman asked to be returned to Mexico because of conditions in a US prison

The former head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Joaquin Guzman, known by the nickname Shorty, who is serving a life sentence in the United States, asked Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to facilitate his return to his homeland. This was reported on June 11 by the Milenio newspaper.

According to the newspaper, in his appeal, the drug lord complained about the conditions of detention in a Colorado prison. According to him, he is deprived of the opportunity to meet with relatives. In addition, Guzman claims that the trial against him was unfair, and also complains to the Mexican authorities.

"The Mexican government was the cause of all the murders, and I was accused of trying to protect my life and my family in Mexico," the newspaper quoted the letter from the drug lord.

Guzman was extradited from Mexico to the United States in 2017. Two years later, an American court sentenced him to life in prison without parole, finding him guilty of drug trafficking, money laundering and leading a criminal community. The former cartel leader is currently being held in the high-security federal prison ADX Florence in Colorado.

The Milenio newspaper, citing government sources, reported on February 22 that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the head of one of the country's largest drug cartels, the Jalisco New Generation, had been eliminated in Mexico. The operation took place in the municipality of Talpa de Allende in the state of Jalisco. It is clarified that Cervantes was considered one of the most influential drug lords in the country after the arrest of Joaquin Guzman, known as El Chapo.
