What is the church holiday on June 14th?
Justin the Philosopher was born in the second century in Shechem, the ancient city of Samaria, which later became known as Flavia Neapolis. His parents were pagan Greeks, and the boy himself aspired to knowledge from his youth and consistently studied various philosophical schools — Stoics, Peripatetics, Pythagoreans and Platonists.
But none of these teachings gave him an answer to the main question — where to look for the true God. According to church tradition, the meeting with the elder outside the city was decisive. He explained to Justin the basics of the Christian faith and advised him to seek revelation not only in the arguments of philosophers, but also in the Holy Scriptures, with prayer and inner effort.
At about the age of 30, Justin was baptized, after which he began to preach Christianity among pagans, traveled extensively throughout the Roman Empire, and opened a school where he spoke about the faith.
Around 155, during the persecution under Emperor Antoninus Pius, Justin submitted an "Apology" to the ruler in defense of Christians who were accused of crimes without evidence. Later in Ephesus, he argued with Rabbi Tryphon, proving Christian teaching through Old Testament prophecies. This dispute formed the basis of his essay "Conversation with Tryphon the Jew."
In 161, after the accession of Marcus Aurelius to the throne, Justin sent the Roman Senate a second "Apology." After returning to Rome, he continued to preach. According to legend, the Cynic philosopher Crescens, whom the future saint defeated in disputes, slandered him before the authorities. The saint was arrested along with his students. In the church calendars, Chariton, Charita, Evelpist, Hierax, Peon, Liverian, as well as another martyr named Justin are mentioned next to him. They were required to sacrifice to pagan gods, but they refused, for which they were executed.
Traditions of the national holiday Ustinov day on June 14th
In Russia, the name Justin in the vernacular was transformed into a more familiar one — Ustin, so the day of veneration of the saint was called Ustinov Day.
The second name of the holiday is Ustin — lingonberry lips, and the peasants associated it with the color of the morning sky and had nothing to do with the tart berry. Knowledgeable people on June 14 closely monitored the color of the morning sky and judged the future harvest by the "lingonberry" dawn.
In the peasant calendar, June 14 was considered the boundary between late spring and real summer. "Ustin is between May and June tyn," the ancestors said. The word "tyn" meant a fence, a barrier, a frontier.
On Ustinov day, the ancestors went to buy medicinal herbs. It was believed that in the middle of June, plants gain strength, so the leaves, flowers and stems collected during this period will be especially useful for homemade decoctions and infusions. Knowledgeable people tried not to uproot the herbs so that the plant could recover. Before the gathering, it was customary to bow to the earth on all fours and apologize for having to take its power from nature.
The housewives on Ustina were sorting through things, putting things in order in closets, sweeping dust from corners, and putting the yard and garden in order. A clean house was supposed to meet the summer without stagnation, quarrels and unnecessary clutter, and a neat yard was to show that the owners were ready for a busy season.
Married couples on Ustin tried not to argue and not to recall old grudges. The saint was popularly perceived as a helper in marital life, so husbands and wives spoke to each other more gently than usual, reconciled after recent quarrels, and asked for forgiveness.
The girls, who were bothered by an unwanted suitor, resorted to the old rite — they tore off a willow twig and stuck it into the ground between their trail and the trail of a young man. According to legend, after that, the obsessive sympathy should have weakened.
What not to do on Ustinov Day
In Russia, Ustinov Day was associated with several prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could deprive a person of prosperity and harmony in the family. So, on June 14, it was forbidden to build or repair fences and hedges. The ancestors believed that such work could cause a fire.
