In Russia, signs and beliefs were given special importance. They were used to determine when to sow and harvest, have weddings and go on a trip. Every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the signs for June 13 and the church holidays that fall on this date.

Folk signs for June 13, 2026

In the folk tradition, June 13 was called Yeremey-bobovnik. During this period, the peasants were actively engaged in planting peas and other legumes. They tried to work without delay, as carefully as possible — there was a belief that seeds should definitely be sent to the ground before the cuckoo began to crow.

The second name of the day, Raspryagalnik, is associated with the end of spring sowing. After the work was completed, the peasants rested their horses: they unharnessed them, cleaned them, fed them better than usual, and gave them something to drink. On this day, they were not saddled or harnessed unless absolutely necessary, so that the horses could regain their strength.

The ideas of the field spirit, the Field Worker, or the Living Grandfather, were also associated with Yeremey-bobovnik. According to legend, after people left the fields, he took care of the bread. To appease the invisible owner of the arable land, treats were left in the field — eggs, grain, apples.

On Yeremey-bobovnik, the peasants carefully observed nature in order to determine what the weather would be like in the coming days and whether the bread would grow. If the cuckoo was crowing loudly, they understood that warm and clear weather was ahead. And the absence of dew in the evening indicated that rain was coming.

Other signs of the day

  • a sunny and dry day — for a good harvest of bread;
  • there is a lot of dew in the morning — the weather will be good;
  • Morning fog is spreading over the ground — there will be a lot of mushrooms in summer;
  • The fog doesn't clear until lunch — the weather will deteriorate.;
  • the spider is actively weaving a web — the bad weather will recede, clear days will be established;
  • cloudy, rainy day — the winter will be cold and prolonged.

What not to do on June 13

In Russia, Yeremey-bobovnik was associated with a number of prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could deprive a person of well-being and health. The main one concerned horses — on June 13, they were not saddled, harnessed, or forced to carry heavy loads. It was believed that the animal could get sick or weaken after this.

What else can not be done on June 13

  • delay the planting of legumes — there will not be a good harvest;
  • Swimming and fishing — mermaids can drag a person to the bottom;
  • picking up a fallen charm pin is a risk of "taking away" someone else's negative along with it.;
  • taking out the trash from the house — you can "take out" prosperity;
  • starting a move will lead to the loss of luck, money, work and health;
  • swearing and raising your voice can lead to illnesses and failures;
  • doing needlework — a thing made on June 13th will quickly deteriorate.

What is the church holiday on June 13th?

On June 13, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr Ermiy Komansky, who suffered for his faith in the second century in the city of Komany. He was a warrior, but he led a righteous and God-fearing life. The ruler Sebastian, who arrived in Cappadocia with orders to persecute Christians, offered the already elderly Hermas to sacrifice to pagan idols, promising honors and the emperor's favor for this. The soldier refused and courageously confessed his faith.

After much unsuccessful persuasion, the ruler ordered the saint to be tortured, but neither fire nor poison did him any harm. Seeing this, the magus, who was preparing a poisoned drink for Hermas, believed in Christ and was immediately executed. In a rage, Sebastianus personally cut off Hermas' head. Christians secretly buried the body of the martyr, and numerous healings were subsequently performed from his relics.

Also on June 13, believers remember the Apostle from 70 Hermas. There is practically no information about his life. The saint is mentioned in the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Romans. Based on this testimony, it can be assumed that he was a member of the Christian community of Rome and was probably one of its prominent members. Church tradition calls Hermas the bishop of Philippi (according to other sources — Philippopolis). The Greek Minaea report that the apostle occupied the episcopal see in the city of Philippi in Thrace.

Prayers for June 13th

On June 13, Orthodox believers pray to the Martyr Hermas of Comana and the Apostle Hermas of 70. They are asked to strengthen their faith, heal from illnesses, grant patience and help in difficult life situations.

Troparion to the Martyr Hermias of Comana

"Thy martyr, O Lord, Hermas, in his suffering, received an incorruptible crown from Thee, our God: for thou hast thy strength, overthrow the tormentors, and crush the demons of feeble insolence. Save our souls through your prayers."

Kontakion to the Martyr Ermiy Komansky

"You who have labored diligently according to Christ, have gained courage in your gray hair, O Martyr Hermas, have corrected the lawless plots of Christ's power, and remain unharmed from the intoxicants,: God is with me, and no one is on me."

Earlier, Izvestia reported on the folk signs and prohibitions of St. Isaac's Day.
