In hot weather, the car's keychain may stop responding to clicks due to overheating of the battery. Evgeny Zhuchkov, technical expert of the NANFU brand, told Izvestia about this on June 11. As the specialist explained, the fact is that at high temperatures, the chemical processes inside it accelerate, which is why the charge is consumed faster and self-discharge increases even when the keychain is not in use, the specialist explained. The materials responsible for energy production also wear out faster, so the battery gradually loses capacity, and the range of the key decreases.
If the battery loses its charge, then with each click the keychain will respond more slowly and you will have to press the button harder to open the car. And with a "heat stroke", the keychain immediately stops working, which may scare the driver at first. It is not necessary to immediately change the battery at the same time, you need to wait a little while until it cools down and starts working again, the expert advised. However, if the battery starts to turn off frequently in the heat, and according to the expiration date it should function properly, you should not postpone the replacement.
"To reduce the risk of problems, when buying a battery for a key fob, pay attention to the main thing — the composition. CR2032 batteries are used for car keyfobs, but not everyone knows that batteries of the same format can vary significantly in composition, and therefore in their characteristics. The main components of such batteries are lithium, manganese dioxide and a steel body, and they are indeed almost the same everywhere. However, some manufacturers use additional materials that can increase the efficiency of the battery. For example, graphene," said Zhuchkov.
Another risk that a battery in a car key may encounter in hot weather is a violation of the tightness of the housing. As the temperature inside the battery increases, the pressure increases, and if the housing is not reliable enough, this can lead to an electrolyte leak. As a result, the battery can damage the contacts and electronic components of the key.
"To reduce the chance of leakage, some manufacturers use an additional U-shaped case reinforcement in CR2032 type batteries. This design increases the strength of the battery and helps to maintain tightness during temperature fluctuations and prolonged storage. As a rule, if such technology is used in the manufacture of batteries, information about it is written on the packaging, so it will not be so difficult to distinguish," the specialist added.
