About 49% of parents teach their children complex topics through videos. This is evidenced on June 11 by a study of the <url> educational platform and VK Videos on children's media consumption.
More than 9,000 students from grades 1 to 8 and over 1,000 parents of preschool and school-age children took part in the survey. It is noted that children of all ages show an increasing interest in long horizontal videos, where 52% of elementary schools and 57% of secondary schools prefer recording longer than 15 minutes.
According to statistics, among preschoolers aged five to seven, about 63% of parents watch videos with their children, 51% note that watching becomes an occasion for communication. At the same time, 44% believe that video combines learning and recreation, while 33% record the development of speech and thinking. Popular genres among preschoolers are story games and adventures (50%), creativity and needlework (42%), videos about animals and nature (42%), space and science (36%). Children themselves often watch videos with their parents.
For elementary school students in grades 1-4, 49% of parents say that the videos provide new information; 53% include videos for recreation; 35% for learning outside of school; 24% for developing thinking. It clarifies that an important criterion for useful content is considered to be engagement, where the child's interest is 59%, and a clear explanation is 39%. Children choose their own videos: 44% — favorite bloggers, 43% — topics of interest, 40% — recommendations. The leading formats are educational video blogs — 54%, interactive videos and challenges -43%, educational cartoons — 40%, master classes — 36%.
However, already in high school (grades 5-8) video becomes an independent learning tool. Thus, 40% use videos for hobbies, 37% for knowledge outside of school, and 31% of schoolchildren for analyzing school topics. After watching, 47% search for additional content, 43% apply it in practice, and 42% repeat experiments. In addition, 60% start new activities, including creativity, workshops and independent content search. Popular topics in this category of schoolchildren are: bloggers — 43%, entertainment videos — 33%, while movies and TV series -30%, science pop -20.7%, experiments -15.3% and history -14.4%.
In April, <url> conducted a study of parents' expectations regarding children's digital skills in elementary school. According to the data, every second adult believes that additional training in working with neural networks should begin in elementary grades. Only 10% of children actually use artificial intelligence (AI), while 43% of parents would like minors to be able to work with it by the end of the fourth grade.
