Megafon operator has launched the first trunk line based on compact 400G transceivers. The solution increases the bandwidth of mobile network channels by four times, while reducing the cost of building such lines by six times, the company noted.

The new technical solution is particularly effective in sections of trunk lines with a high concentration of traffic, so the pilot channel connected Megafon data centers in Moscow, the company said. The transceivers increased the bandwidth of the main channel four times, which reduced latency, increased data transfer rate and reduced the risk of congestion.

The classic scheme for building backbone channels involves the use of routers that determine exactly where data flows should be directed, and expensive DWDM transponders that transmit information over a fiber-optic cable, the company explained. The operator's engineers optimized the process using compact transceivers manufactured by the domestic company Neoros. They perform the functions of transponders, but are installed directly into the router, which significantly reduces the cost of creating channels.

"Using the new solution allows us to build high-speed channels between key sites faster and more efficiently, forming the technological basis for further infrastructure development," said Alexey Titov, Technical Director of Megafon. He noted that the next stage will be the scaling of the project to other data centers across the country.

Megafon's network includes more than 115 processing centers. Over the past two years, new data centers that meet international standards have been built in Khabarovsk, Tver, Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg.
