Plastic surgeon talked about the effect of breast implants on pregnancy

Breast implants in most cases do not prevent pregnancy and breastfeeding, but the success of lactation largely depends on the method of surgery and the individual characteristics of the body. Alexandra Frolova, a plastic surgeon at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about this on June 11.

"Properly installed silicone implants usually do not disrupt the structure of the glandular tissue and ducts of the mammary glands, that is, they are safe. The composition of breast milk does not depend on the presence of implants. Modern materials are inert and do not penetrate into the bloodstream or milk with the integrity of the implant shell," the specialist noted.

According to the doctor, the key condition for successful breastfeeding remains the preservation of the milk ducts. The safest place for future lactation is considered to be the placement of the implant under the pectoral muscle. This installation method minimizes the impact on breast tissue and its ductal system.

In this case, pregnancy and lactation may be accompanied by a number of features. Among the possible complications, the specialist identified a decrease in milk production, breast tenderness, lactostasis and mastitis. In addition, hormonal changes and breast enlargement during pregnancy can affect the position of the implants and the appearance of the mammary glands after lactation.

Frolova stressed that it is important for women planning motherhood after mammoplasty to discuss this issue with a surgeon in advance. In particular, the doctor can choose the optimal type of surgery and the method of implant placement, taking into account the future pregnancy.

The specialist also recommended that during pregnancy and lactation, she be regularly monitored by a doctor, monitor weight gain and use supportive underwear. After breast-feeding is completed, she advises waiting six to 12 months before a final breast assessment, as natural tissue changes continue during this period.
