Former German Chancellor Gerhrad Schroeder is the only person who fits the role of a potential negotiator with Russia. This was announced on June 11 by the head of the branch of the opposition German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the federal state of Saxony, Joerg Urban.

"The shredder [fits] best," he stated in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Urban explained the relevant position by saying that the former German chancellor had previously led an entire state and was elected to his post by a majority vote. In addition, Schroeder's good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin play a special role, as the politician explained.

Commenting on the possible nomination of his party to participate in possible negotiations with the Russian side, the AfD representative suggested that, in general, the association could assume such responsibilities. Now, however, as he emphasized, it is young and oppositional.

Schroeder's candidacy as Europe's preferred negotiator with Moscow was first put forward by the Russian leader himself back on May 9. This initiative was almost immediately rejected by the current German authorities.

Almost a month later, on June 8, Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Luxembourg, said that the former head of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, could represent the European side in negotiations with Russia. This candidate, as he explained, is also well acquainted with Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
