In Russia, rules prohibiting the naming of synthetic stones as diamonds will come into force in 2026. The new regulations were approved by the government on the website. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

New labeling requirements

Starting from September 1, 2026, new Rules for the sale of goods under a retail sale agreement will come into effect in Russia. According to the document, the diamond status is assigned exclusively to diamonds of natural origin. The changes are aimed at protecting consumer rights and increasing the transparency of the jewelry market.

According to Alexey Moiseev, Deputy Finance Minister of the Russian Federation, the amendments will help buyers make informed choices.

"The key goal of the new rules is to increase the transparency of the jewelry showcase and protect consumers. Precious items are a significant purchase, which is often associated with a gift, family history and long—term value," said Moiseev.

Prohibition on the use of terms

Jewelry sellers will be required to disclose in detail the non-natural origin of the stones. A special term "faceted synthetic diamond" has been approved for such products. When describing artificial inserts, it is forbidden to use the terms "diamond", "precious", "natural", "natural" and their derivatives. These requirements apply to any form of information submission, from store labels to promotional materials and certificates.

For synthetic stones, there is also a ban on the use of traditional carat weight characteristics. It is allowed to indicate the mass of such products only in grams. Labels and tags must be marked with the mandatory label "synthetic" or the abbreviation "Synthetic".

The pricing process

The reform is designed to eliminate the risk of unjustified overpayment for jewelry. Previously, the lack of clear terminology made it possible to position synthetic stones as comparable to natural diamonds. At the same time, the cost and wholesale price of artificial inserts are significantly lower than their natural counterparts.

The new rules will make the difference between product categories obvious to the buyer. The Ministry of Finance stressed that this approach is consistent with international practice in the jewelry business.

"The approved changes are designed to make the relationship between the seller and the consumer of jewelry more honest and transparent," Moiseev said.
