- Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova spoke about the change in meaning by the authorities on May 9
Chisinau considers May 9 as a day of remembrance, not victory, since, from its point of view, the end of the Second World War marked not the liberation of the country, but the alleged beginning of a "difficult period." This was announced on May 10 by Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova for European Integration Kristina Gerasimov in a conversation with Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov (Vovan) and Alexey Stolyarov (Lexus).
"For us, this is a day of remembrance, not victory. This is a slightly different perspective. <...> For us, it meant that the bad days had really begun, <...> and it was not a release," she said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also reported on Moldovan President Maia Sandu's concern about the pace of European integration. According to her, the authorities expected to open a new stage of negotiations with the European Union earlier, but this process is being delayed and the lack of results may now cause discontent among voters in future elections.
Gerasimov admitted that she does not yet see concrete steps to promote the European integration of Moldova and Ukraine and said that the process sometimes seems "endless" to her. At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the Moldovan authorities remain focused on joining the EU by 2030 and continue to work on meeting the necessary conditions for membership in the association.
"We took a huge political risk...> People will seriously question us in the next election if we don't fulfill our promise," Gerasimov complained.
On June 2, Politico newspaper admitted that the opening of the first negotiating cluster on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU is scheduled for June 15 as part of an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. Both countries applied for membership at the same time, which means that Moldova's application can only move forward if Ukraine's application is also accepted.
On April 28, Sandu allowed unification with Romania in order to speed up the EU accession process. She added that the accession is possible without taking into account the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR). Sandu confirmed her intention to prepare Moldova for EU membership by 2030.
