Experts have dispelled myths about deadly risks during pregnancy
It is important for pregnant women to avoid frightening information and carefully monitor the symptoms that may indicate complications. Experts told Izvestia which fears about pregnancy are myths, when to see a doctor, and how anxiety can affect the condition of the expectant mother.
Causes of anxiety and myths about prohibitions
The increased emotionality of pregnant women is often associated with changes in the hormonal background and the natural desire to preserve the fetus. Integrative psychologist and trauma therapist Polina Yurkova notes that expectant mothers become more sensitive to negative information, especially during their first pregnancy. Surrounding a woman with bright and kind impressions is the main rule during this period.
The opinion that travel, sports, and flights are contraindicated for pregnant women is largely a myth for healthy women. According to the psychologist, giving up an active lifestyle without medical indications prevents a woman from enjoying life. The expert also refuted the belief about the hereditary nature of severe childbirth, explaining that the process depends on many individual factors, including health status and psychological attitude.
"Whenever possible, [it is necessary] to surround a pregnant woman with good, beautiful, bright, kind, in order not to cause negative emotions once again. This is the basic rule during pregnancy," Yurkova emphasized.
Medical recommendations and "red flags"
Anastasia Laskevich, a gynecologist at the Yusupov Hospital, explained that vaccination and medication during pregnancy are acceptable if the benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk. The specialist also dispelled the myth of the absolute safety of cesarean section.
"A caesarean section performed against the indications can lead to complications and death on the part of the mother and fetus," said Laskevich.
To prevent complications in a timely manner, pregnant women need to know the signals that require immediate medical attention. Such "red flags" include blood pressure above 130 over 90, blood discharge, regular abdominal pain and changes in fetal movements. Also dangerous symptoms are a veil in front of the eyes and a temperature above 37.5 degrees.
Risks of information overload
Although severe stress does not directly cause fetal death, it can trigger a dangerous rise in blood pressure. Reading frightening information on the Internet also harms a woman's condition, causing obsessive thoughts and panic attacks. The psychologist warns that information noise can bring the expectant mother to nervous exhaustion even before the onset of labor.
After the birth of a child, some mothers develop excessive, anxious care. This is manifested in constant checks of the baby's breathing, distrust of relatives and doctors, as well as excessive medical examinations for no apparent reason. Often, this behavior becomes a substitute for deep emotional feelings if contact was disrupted due to a difficult birth or early weaning of the child.
