The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to Iran's lack of interest in withdrawing from the NPT

Withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is not in Iran's interests either now or in the future. This was stated on June 9 by the head of the Russian delegation to the NPT Review Conference, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Belousov.

"As for Iran's withdrawal, the Islamic Republic is a sovereign state, and the Iranians can make any decision. But, in my opinion, such a step is not in Iran's interests either at the moment or in the future for many reasons," TASS quoted him as saying.

Belousov stressed that in case of withdrawal, Iran would have closed for itself the opportunity to use the treaty and rely on its articles when implementing its plans in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

In addition, the diplomat noted that if the Islamic Republic withdraws from the treaty, it will give a new reason for the country's ill-wishers to take extreme measures against it. According to him, the Iranian leadership will not take such measures.

Mohsen Rezai, the military adviser to the supreme leader of Iran, said on May 24 that the Islamic Republic could withdraw from the NPT if the threats and aggressive actions from the United States continued. He called withdrawal from the treaty one of the strategic options for Tehran's actions. Rezai noted that in case of further increased pressure, Iran may take retaliatory measures, including breaking the naval blockade.
