Experts have dispelled myths about the sexual incompatibility of couples
Many couples attribute decreased libido, lack of orgasm, or discomfort during intimacy to sexual incompatibility. However, in most cases, such problems are caused by diseases, hormonal disorders or side effects of medications, experts told Izvestia on June 8.
The influence of physiology
Decreased libido or pain during intimacy in 70-80% of cases are associated with somatic or hormonal disorders. As Ekaterina Kim, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Invitro, noted, specific medical symptoms such as dryness, lack of orgasm, or erectile dysfunction are usually behind complaints of incompatibility. These conditions can be corrected with proper treatment.
Among the main factors in women are estrogen deficiency, inflammatory processes and endometriosis. Testosterone levels play a key role in men. Also, the quality of intimate life is affected by chronic pathologies: diabetes mellitus, hypertension and thyroid diseases. Pain during intercourse is not the norm and requires mandatory medical attention.
Side effects of medications
Taking certain medications often causes sexual dysfunction. In men, antidepressants can lead to decreased desire. Women also face side effects: hormonal contraceptives can suppress libido, and antihistamines cause dry mucous membranes.
"After drug withdrawal, libido usually recovers within a few weeks to months. However, with prolonged use of certain medications, persistent sexual dysfunction syndrome is possible," Kim noted.
Myths about incompatibility
In professional sexology, the concept of incompatibility is viewed differently than in everyday life. People often use this term as manipulation to justify inaction or unwillingness to develop a relationship. Sexologist Ekaterina Makarova emphasizes that complaints about the difference in temperaments often hide personal conflicts and the lack of dialogue in a couple.
"Sexual incompatibility is actually both a myth and a reality, depending on the situation. If we talk about the medical component, then this is, of course, a myth. Of course, there is no such diagnosis," said Makarova.
The specialist advises couples to start with open communication. If partners avoid discussing intimate topics, this is more often due to fear or ignorance of their own desires. To establish contact, the expert recommends using special game techniques or question cards that help you find out each other's preferences in a relaxed environment.
