Summer heat can cause decreased performance, weakness, and problems with concentration if, along with appetite, a person reduces their intake of important nutrients. Natalia Firsova, a gynecologist, endocrinologist, clinical nutritionist and Solgar expert, told Izvestia about this on June 11.

According to the expert, a decrease in appetite in hot weather is a natural physiological reaction of the body. Digesting heavy food requires additional energy, which is accompanied by heat production, whereas in conditions of high temperature the body is focused on maintaining thermoregulation.

"That is why many people do not want fatty foods, heavy meals and large portions in the summer. A decrease in appetite in the heat is a physiological norm," Firsova explained.

However, the problem arises when a person begins to consume less not only food, but also proteins, vitamins, minerals and fluids necessary for the body. As a result, there may be signs of energy deficiency, deterioration of well-being and decreased performance.

The expert noted that for the normal functioning of the nervous system, blood vessels, muscles and brain, the body needs magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, sufficient protein and water. At the same time, in summer, many people limit themselves to fruits, soft drinks and light snacks, which does not allow them to meet the needs of the body.

The body reacts especially sensitively to a lack of fluids and electrolytes. Even mild dehydration can cause drowsiness, headaches, decreased concentration, and a constant feeling of fatigue.

The doctor called irregular meals another common mistake. Often, due to the heat, people practically do not eat during the day, and in the evening they compensate for the lack of food with a hearty dinner. Such a regime can lead to poor sleep, heaviness in the stomach and fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

To maintain well-being in the summer, Firsova recommends choosing light but regular meals, including fish, eggs, poultry and dairy products as protein sources in the diet, eating more vegetables, herbs, berries and fruits, and monitoring sufficient water intake.

On May 17, Science Daily reported on the dangers of prolonged fasting for the body. According to scientists, avoiding food for a long period of time not only contributes to changes in brain function, but also affects metabolism and the immune system. At the same time, it was emphasized that key molecular shifts begin only after three days of fasting.
