Kiev may lose €680 million due to failure to implement anti-corruption reforms
Ukraine may lose about €680 million from the European Union (EU) due to non-fulfillment of a number of obligations in the field of anti-corruption reforms. This was reported on June 8 by the Ukrainian edition of "Public" with reference to a source in the European Commission (EC).
"The amounts related to these tranches have been suspended. This means that they have not been paid yet," the publication says.
According to the source, Kiev failed to meet two conditions related to the fourth and fifth tranches of financial assistance on time. One of the unfulfilled obligations concerns the increase in the staff of the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court. The payment of almost €300 million is linked to this condition, and the deadline for its fulfillment is set for June 30.
More than 380 million euros are tied to the entry into force of legislation on the revision of declarations of judicial integrity and the procedure for their verification. Ukraine must fulfill this requirement by September 29. Both conditions relate to the anti-corruption reforms that Brussels is demanding from Kiev as part of the European integration process.
EC representative Balash Uyvari said on June 1 that Ukraine would have to complete a number of technical and procedural steps to receive the first tranche of the EU loan. According to him, after signing the loan agreement, the Ukrainian side needs to fulfill the remaining formalities stipulated by the agreements with the EU.
