Every year on June 10, Orthodox believers honor the memory of St. Nikita the Confessor, Bishop of Chalcedon, defender of shrines in the era of iconoclastic disputes. In the national calendar, the date is known as Nikita Gusyatnik, or Noon. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Wednesday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

What is the church holiday on June 10th?

Nikita of Chalcedon lived in the second half of the VIII – beginning of the IX century in Chalcedon, an ancient city on the Asia Minor coast of the Bosphorus, opposite Constantinople. Details about his place of birth, parents, and early years of life have not been preserved. It is known that from his youth he chose the monastic path, renouncing worldly attachments in order to serve God.

Over time, Nikita was appointed Bishop of Chalcedon for his strict life, education and authority among Christians. In this position, he became famous for his works of mercy, helping the poor, receiving pilgrims, caring for orphans and widows, protecting the innocently convicted and those who faced injustice.

During the reign of Emperor Leo V of Armenia, iconoclasm intensified in Byzantium. During this period, a serious conflict broke out within the church — the bishops were required to obey the new policy and abandon the open veneration of icons. The authorities destroyed shrines and forced the laity to abandon their usual Orthodox practices.

Nikita of Chalcedon openly opposed the iconoclasts. He called this teaching a departure from church tradition and urged his flock not to abandon the veneration of images of Christ, the Virgin and saints. This position made him uncomfortable for the authorities. The saint was subjected to pressure, humiliation, and torment, but he did not renounce his beliefs.

At the end of his life, Nikita was sent into exile. The saint died at the beginning of the 9th century. After his death, believers revered his relics as a shrine, where, according to church tradition, healings were performed.

Traditions of the Nikita Gusyatnik folk festival on June 10

In Russia, by June 10, goslings, ducklings and chickens were already growing up in peasant farms, therefore, in the national calendar, the day of veneration of the saint, whom the ancestors considered the heavenly protector of poultry, was named Nikita Gusyatnik.

In the morning, believers went to the temple and prayed to Nikita of Chalcedon for the health of their loved ones, help in business, and protection of livestock. The saint was asked to protect geese, ducks, chickens and their chicks from pestilence, injury, predators and the evil eye. In the popular consciousness, his mercy for people was naturally transferred to weak creatures in need of protection.

Upon returning from the church, the peasants made sure to make a "detour" of the courtyard. They looked especially closely at the goslings, checking to see if anyone had strayed from the flock, if there were any lame or weak chicks, if they had enough water and food. After all, the disease of young animals was perceived as a direct threat to the farm.

The housewives prepared a special food for the goslings and ducklings — wheat porridge on consecrated water, to which an egg was added. Such a treat helped the young birds to get stronger faster.

In early June, the sun was already really hot, the most dangerous hour, according to popular beliefs, was at noon. At that time, noon girls allegedly appeared in the fields. Some, according to legend, could shelter crops from the scorching sun, while others could harm people and crops. Hence the other name of the holiday — Noon.

Therefore, they tried to wait out the midday part of the day in the villages, and they did not go out into the field unnecessarily, especially men and young girls. The midwives were represented by women who could be mistaken for ordinary peasants, but meeting them was considered dangerous. According to legend, they deprived men of their masculine strength, and girls could be dragged into dancing to exhaustion.

On this day, the mothers of restless babies took their children out into the yard at dawn, stood facing the sun, uttered a spell and returned home, backing away. This ceremony was supposed to restore the child's peace of mind and a good night's sleep.

And pregnant women went to the field before noon — according to beliefs, growing bread could give strength and health to the unborn child.

What not to do on Nikita Gusyatnik holiday

In Russia, Nikita Gusyatnik was associated with a number of strict prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could attract evil spirits to a person and, as a result, misfortunes and illnesses. For this reason, on June 9, it was forbidden to leave the house open. The ancestors believed that dark spirits could enter the dwelling in this way.

What else can not be done on June 10:

  • to go out into the field at noon — you can meet midwives and lose your health;

  • letting strangers into the house — an outsider can take away luck, money and family peace.;
  • swearing and swearing — an evil word opens the way to quarrels and lack of money;
  • leaving goslings and ducklings unattended — young birds can be killed by diseases, predators or an accident.;
  • Handling fire carelessly is a high risk of fire.
