The Supreme Court of Tatarstan declared the expulsion of a student due to AI illegal

The Supreme Court of Tatarstan confirmed the illegality of the expulsion of a student from a Moscow university, whose work was considered a generated neural network. This became known on June 8 from court documents.

"The report of the verification system is probabilistic in nature, contains a reservation, the final decision remains with the expert, while the supervisor, as recognized by the university itself, is not aware of the principles of the system," RIA Novosti cites the text of the documents.

The court found that the student uploaded the work into the system three times. The first check showed 41.91% of the content created by artificial intelligence (AI). For the second time, the supervisor stated a deliberate violation of the logic of words in 70% of the text, regarding it as falsification. The third result revealed only 11.92% of loans from AI, but the university refused to accept the job, citing missing the deadline. At the same time, the last day of completion was June 8, 2025..

The department decided not to admit the student to the defense on June 10, on the same day the expulsion order was signed. The girl was not invited to the meeting and was not given time to appeal. Later, on September 4, the university rejected her appeal.

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court of Tatarstan applied Article 193 of the Civil Code (CC) of the Russian Federation, according to which the last day of the term is postponed to the next working day, and recognized the loading of the diploma as timely. The representative of the defendant confirmed that the supervisor did not actually check the text for neural network generation. In addition, the university could not explain the mechanism by which text copying differs from AI work.

The court decided to reinstate the student in her fourth year and ordered the educational institution to allow the work to be defended on condition of at least 50% originality. 40 thousand rubles of compensation for moral damage and 20 thousand rubles of a fine were collected from the university.

The head of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, announced on May 27 that theses may soon disappear due to the development of AI, and higher education institutions will return to the oral exam. The minister also noted that the educational process will require major changes, as a new generation of students will be accustomed to AI from birth, which will change approaches to learning and thinking in universities.

Yaroslav Nilov, head of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, noted in January that Russia should partially legalize the use of AI in education. At the same time, as the parliamentarian pointed out, it is important to modernize the Anti-Plagiarism system for detecting AI-generated texts.
