- Lavrov spoke about Russia's attitude towards the candidacy of a woman for the post of UN Secretary General
Russia does not mind a woman heading the UN. This was announced on June 8 by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference following a conversation with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khaliluru Rahman.
"We are not at all opposed to women heading this organization (UN — Ed.), like any other organization," he commented on Bachelet's candidacy.
Lavrov also said that today he would hold a meeting with the candidate for the post of the new UN Secretary General, Michelle Bachelet, who is currently in Moscow.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 4 that Moscow hopes that the new UN Secretary General will take into account the mistakes of his predecessor Antonio Guterres. She added that Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, maintains a dialogue with Guterres and will continue it to bring its assessments.
The term of office of the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expires on December 31, 2026. On June 2, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov announced that the candidate for the post of UN Secretary General and former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet may visit Russia in the coming days.
