A magnetic storm will hit the Earth

A G3-level magnetic storm may begin on Earth after the arrival of a cloud of solar plasma ejected by the Sun a few days ago. This forecast was presented on June 8 by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute (IRI). RAN in the Telegram channel. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

Magnetic storm forecast

According to experts, the surge in solar activity, which was observed in early June, may lead to the development of a strong magnetic storm on a planetary scale. Its capacity is expected to reach the G3 level. The laboratory noted that the probability of such a scenario is estimated at 96%.

The plasma cloud is approaching the Earth

We are talking about one of the solar plasma emissions that occurred on June 6. Initially, the cloud was moving away from our planet, but mathematical models show that its trajectory can lead it to Earth. According to the forecast, the plasma stream is capable of reaching near-Earth space in the coming hours.

Spacecraft data

One of the main arguments in favor of the forecast was the observations of the STEREO device, which monitors the Sun and Earth from a distance of about 100 million km. The resulting images showed that the plasma ejection is directed towards the Earth.

An additional confirmation was the data from coronographs, which recorded the phenomenon of the "halo" type, characteristic of emissions moving towards our planet.

The storm may last more than a day.

According to scientists, the probability that geomagnetic disturbances will persist for more than one day is about 85%. If the forecast is confirmed, the magnetic storm will affect not only June 8, but also the next day.
