For the first time, the countries of the European Union (EU) have imposed sanctions against Iran for blocking the Strait of Hormuz and obstructing navigation there. This was stated on June 8 by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, during a speech at a press conference following an informal meeting of the association's defense ministers in Cyprus.
"Overnight, we again witnessed an escalation [between Israel and Iran]. <...> Today, for the first time, sanctions for freedom of navigation against Iran will also be applied," she is quoted as saying on the website of the European diplomatic service.
The relevant measures, as explained by Callas, will be taken in parallel with the EU's continuation of the Aspides defensive operation in the region, launched in 2023 against the background of the escalation in the Red Sea.
The head of the European Diplomacy said that the Middle East does not need such a conflict. The parties affected by the escalation should, according to her, sit down at the negotiating table and agree with each other. The EU, as Callas added, can, in turn, help with the ceasefire.
Iran and Israel began exchanging blows the night before. Initially, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired missiles in response to the aggression of Israel, which repeatedly violated the truce with Lebanon. This escalation was immediately reported to Trump, who, in turn, expressed dissatisfaction with Tel Aviv, which attacked Lebanese Beirut. The head of the White House called on the parties to urgently stop the exchange of fire.
Two days earlier, the Iranian armed forces attacked ships that tried to cross the Strait of Hormuz without their permission. It was noted that these ships allegedly acted "at the instigation" of Washington.
