The largest systematic analysis of data on collagen supplements confirmed their benefits for skin health and relief of osteoarthritis symptoms, but found no evidence of an effect on athletic performance. A meta-analysis involving almost 8,000 people was conducted by Anglia Ruskin University scientists. This was reported on June 5 by Science Daily magazine.

"This study brings together the strongest existing evidence on the effectiveness of collagen. It is not a universal remedy, but with systematic long—term use it gives real results, primarily for the skin and osteoarthritis. Our findings confirm clear benefits in key aspects of healthy aging while debunking a number of myths," said Professor Lee Smith.

The analysis included data from 16 systematic reviews, 113 randomized controlled trials, and almost eight thousand participants from different countries. It was found that the longer a person takes collagen, the more noticeably the hydration and elasticity of the skin improve; a similar pattern was found in relation to pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis. In addition, the intake of collagen is associated with a moderate increase in muscle mass and an improvement in the structure of muscles and tendons.

No significant effect was found in the area of athletic performance, recovery from training, and muscle soreness. The data on the effect on metabolic parameters turned out to be contradictory: cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, as well as on oral health.

As Medical Xpress magazine reported on March 29, a study showed that collagen supplements have become one of the best-selling products in the health and beauty industry. Experts have found that they help reduce pain in osteoarthritis.
