- ABC News has learned about the US preparations for the first execution of war criminals in 65 years.
The United States Army is ready to carry out the death sentences for four prisoners by direct order of the head of the White House, Donald Trump. This was reported on June 6 by ABC News TV channel with reference to the internal documents of the military.
It is clarified that a plan called Operation Decisive Justice has been developed to implement the order, which provides for the transfer of convicts from Kansas to the federal execution center in Indiana.
"The army is preparing to carry out the death sentence against four prisoners sentenced to death if the president gives the appropriate order. If this happens, it will be the first time that the military executes convicted American prisoners in more than half a century," the article says.
It is noted that the last military execution in the United States took place in 1961.
The Daily Star newspaper reported on May 20 that the death sentence of Richard Glossip, an Oklahoma resident who spent 29 years behind bars and escaped execution three times, was overturned in the United States. According to the newspaper, the man was arrested in January 1997 on charges of organizing the murder of hotelier Barry Van Treese.
On April 24, the US Department of Justice took measures to restore the use of the federal death penalty, including the resumption of the lethal injection protocol and the introduction of the firing squad. Thus, the agency lifted the indefinite moratorium on federal executions imposed under former President Joe Biden.
