Ex-deputy Minister of Italy called the country a "ship without a captain" because of Meloni

The main disadvantage of the current Italian leadership is the lack of leadership, which has turned the country into a "ship without a captain." This was announced on June 6 by Michele Geraci, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy.

"The main problem is the lack of leadership. There is no industrial plan, there is no courage to stand up for their citizens, and therefore people in the government are inactive or doing little," he told RIA Novosti on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).

Geraci stressed that Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni is breaking records for the length of government. According to him, she understands that in order to remain in power, she needs to do nothing. The former deputy minister stressed that inaction means the absence of "the captain of the ship."

In addition, he noted that other systemic problems in Italy include low wages, an influx of migrants, a decline in competitiveness and the economy's dependence on external factors.

On April 22, the Politico newspaper reported on the clarification by Brussels of Italy's growing budget deficit, which went beyond the fundamental norms of the European Union (EU). The publication noted that at the same time, the government of Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni is increasing spending in an attempt to mitigate the effects of escalation in the Middle East. According to Eurostat, the deficit was 3.1% in 2025. Rome exceeded the pan-European threshold by 0.1 percentage points, which made the Meloni government's priority goal of withdrawing the country from the European Program to reduce public spending unattainable.
