- Likhachev announced plans to launch year-round transportation along the NSR by 2035.
Rosatom plans to switch to year-round cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) based on the caravan principle in the period from 2031 to 2035. This was announced on Friday, June 5, by the head of the state corporation Alexey Likhachev at the session "New Horizons of Global Logistics and the logistics contour of the Arctic" during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
"From 2031 to 2035, we must switch to a year—round model of the NSR with a caravan principle, where the maximum number of vessels can be accepted at any time convenient for them on transit trips," Likhachev said.
According to him, the most difficult seasons for transportation are winter and spring. He also added that by 2035, the state corporation plans to increase the volume of cargo transportation along the NSR to 150 million tons per year.
"We must be prepared for an explosive increase in traffic along this highway by at least two times. At any moment, we must have a trigger that switches us from the target scenario currently being implemented to a scenario that is many times more ambitious due to the international demand," Likhachev stressed.
Alexey Chekunkov, the Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, noted in an interview with Izvestia the day before that the NSR is a cornerstone in the goal of achieving a trade turnover of $300 billion with China.
