Student protests over education reform in Belgium

In Belgium, mass protests by teachers and students escalated into clashes with police over government plans to cut education costs by 300 million euros. This was reported on June 5 by the Dutch newspaper De Standaard.

The government of the country plans to increase the cost of education by almost a third and increase the burden on teachers without additional payment.

Several thousand protesters gathered in Brussels at the Central Station. The protesters set fire to dumpsters and damaged storefronts. After the attack on the firefighters, the police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the most aggressive participants. Law enforcement officers detained ten people.

Similar actions took place in the cities of Namur and Charleroi, where students and teachers protested. Despite the massive demonstrations, Parliament approved the controversial budget decree on an expedited basis.
