The Hydropulse flood early warning system is being tested in the Oymyakon district of Yakutia. The purpose of her work is the rapid detection of rain floods in the upper reaches of mountain rivers.

It is in these areas that the surveillance networks of the Russian Hydrometeorological Service do not work so effectively. Later, when the field tests are completed, the system will be introduced to other regions of Yakutia and the Arctic territories of Russia.

The system is being developed by a group of specialists from the Arctic Scientific Research Center of Yakutia. IA YakutiaMedia clarifies that the tests on the Kenkame River were completed successfully. Experts have checked all the main elements of the system, including water level sensors, transceivers and the base station.

At the end of June, scientists will go to the Indigirka River in the Oymyakon district. The problem of rain floods is most acute there.

The agency clarifies that the monitoring point consists of three water level sensors and a system of receivers and transmitters. Sensors installed upstream transmit data over a local wireless network. Based on these data, the base station calculates the forecast water level. The system does not depend on cellular communication.

Yakutia is considered one of the most flood-prone Russian regions. In July 2025, the water level in the local rivers rose sharply. The Oymyakon district suffered the most. Experts estimated the damage at over 300 million rubles.

In May, authorities announced the urgent evacuation of two villages in Yakutia, Vitima and Peleduya, due to rising water in the Lena River. Nyurbinsky, Vilyuysky, Lensky and Olekminsky districts were among the territories with a high risk of flooding.
