For the first time in its history, Germany did not receive the necessary number of votes to be elected to the UN Security Council, losing to Austria and Portugal. This was announced on June 4 by German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl, calling the result of the vote a bitter defeat.

"We firmly support Ukraine, and Russia does not want to see such a voice in the Security Council," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The minister noted that Berlin's support for Israel in the conflict against Iran could also cost votes. According to him, Germany bears a historical responsibility for this state. Germany received 104 votes, which is 27 less than Austria, which scored 131 votes.

Yesterday it became known that Kyrgyzstan was elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time in the country's history. During the elections, Kyrgyzstan competed for a seat in the Security Council with the Philippines. The Republic was able to gain the necessary two thirds of the votes of the members of the General Assembly after four rounds. In the final round, 142 states supported the country's candidacy.

From January 1, 2027, Austria, Zimbabwe, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago will also join the Security Council as non-permanent members. They will replace Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. The terms of office of the current non-permanent members expire on December 31, 2026.
