New car sales in Russia increased by more than 20% in May
By the end of May this year, 109.9 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 20.5% more than in the same month last year. This is stated in the report of the analytical agency Autostat, which Izvestia reviewed on June 4.
Lada retained its leadership in the Russian market at the end of spring with a great advantage, accounting for more than a quarter of the market, which in quantitative terms amounts to almost 28.4 thousand cars sold.
Among foreign brands, Haval once again had the highest result, with cars selling 15.8 thousand units in May. On the third line is the domestic brand Tenet (11.5 thousand units), which replaced the Chery brand in the Russian market.
The top five also includes Geely and Changan brands (6836 and 5194 units, respectively). The top ten was joined by the Belarusian brand Belgee (5,156 units), Toyota (3,014 units), Chinese Jaecoo (2,861 units) and Jetour (2,830 units), as well as the domestic brand Solaris (1991 units), under which Kia and Hyundai are sold.
Only two brands out of ten presented showed negative dynamics in May — Changan (-7.9%) and Jetour (-15.7%). And Toyota recorded the best growth (+102.6%), which is not officially represented on the Russian market.
In total, 492.3 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia over the past five months of 2026, which is 11.8% more than in January–May 2025. Here, four brands are "in the red", among which Changan's results decreased the most (-25.2%). The rest recorded market growth, with Toyota having the strongest growth (+98.4%).
The day before, it was reported that in the spring of this year, demand for new cars increased by 14.6% compared to the same period last year. The average cost of a new car was 3.5 million rubles, and the most popular models included Lada Granta, Tenet T7 and Haval Jolion.
