Germany seized 8 tons of cocaine disguised as cocoa worth €500 million
German authorities have seized 500 million euros worth of cocaine disguised as cocoa. This was reported by Bloomberg on June 3.
"During one of the largest operations to curb drug trafficking in the country in recent years, the German authorities have seized more than 8 tons of cocaine, the market value of which is estimated at 500 million euros," the material says.
The customs officers of the Jade Weser port in the city of Wilhelmshaven in northwestern Germany conducted an X-ray inspection of a container arriving from West Africa. The cargo was registered as cocoa beans and was intended for unloading in Spain. According to the agency, more than 400 packages of compressed cocaine briquettes wrapped in black foil and equipped with GPS trackers were found during the search.
In coordination with their Spanish counterparts, German authorities destroyed the cocaine and shipped the container to its destination in Barcelona, leading to the arrest of two alleged organizers.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, cocaine flows to Europe have "increased dramatically" in recent years due to increased production and consumption of the banned substance.
Earlier, on May 18, in the UK, truck driver Jakub Jan Konkel transported 90 kg of cocaine worth about 7.2 million pounds, along with clothes and underwear from the Skims brand owned by model Kim Kardashian. It was clarified that there were 90 packages inside, each of which contained 1 kg of narcotic substance.
