Moldova will not be able to survive without economic cooperation with Russia. Igor Dodon, the former President of the Republic and leader of the opposition Party of Socialists, shared this conviction with Izvestia on June 3 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

He explained that in the case of importing resources from the European Union (EU), Moldova would have "no chance" because their cost would be too high.

"From an economic point of view, we need Russia, we need the CIS, that's for sure. We need economic neutrality. <...> What does this mean? Not to impose sanctions against anyone," Dodon explained.

As an example, he cited Georgia, which refused to impose sanctions and received economic growth.

"We can all see what happened to other countries," Dodon stressed.

CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told Izvestia on May 29 that Moldova had sent a note to the Commonwealth withdrawing from the main association agreements, but was going to remain a party to more than 100 economic treaties. According to him, the exit procedure will take a whole year. During this time, a special group will analyze over 200 agreements in which Chisinau participates.

On May 15, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moldova's withdrawal from the CIS would have negative consequences for the citizens of the republic. It was noted that the agency conducted an inventory of international treaties and decisions of bodies in which Chisinau participates.
