Russians have developed a more mature model of financial behavior: They began to save more often and use banking and investment instruments more actively. Such data are presented in the study of the Index of Savings and Investment Activity of Russians (ISIAR), conducted by the PSB in collaboration with the NIFI of the Ministry of Finance of Russia and the NAFI analytical center.

According to Vera Podguzova, Senior Vice President and Director of External Relations at PSB, who presented the results of the SPIEF 2026 study, the overall index of savings and investment activity reached 55 points, an increase of 2.5 points over the year. The main growth factor was the increase in financial literacy and the change in financial habits of the population.

The share of Russians making savings increased from 42% to 48% over the year. At the same time, citizens increasingly prefer to use organized financial instruments. Thus, the share of bank deposit holders increased from 25% to 30%, and current accounts — from 8% to 16%. At the same time, the share of those who keep their savings "under the pillow" decreased from 18% to 16%.

One of the most noticeable trends has been the reduction in the number of so—called fatalists - people who see no point in making savings. Over the year, this indicator decreased by 11 percentage points to 24%.

"Some of the former "fatalists" have started making savings. This is a major change, indicating that the culture of financial planning is gradually becoming more widespread," the PSB noted.

Investments are still a less common practice: 8% of respondents use such tools (compared to 5% a year earlier). At the same time, confidence in the banking system has strengthened to almost 80% against 70% in 2023.

"The growth of involvement in savings and investments is gradual, but it is steady, widespread and has already gone beyond individual social groups. This indicates the transition of society from a model of simple money storage to a model of conscious money management," commented Podguzova.
