Germany called Russia's proposal to mediate with the EU a desire for negotiations

Moscow's proposal to appoint former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a mediator in the negotiations on the Ukrainian conflict shows that Russia is striving to conduct them. This was announced on June 3 by Sarah Wagenknecht, chairman of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV), Sarah Wagenknecht.

"This (the proposal to appoint Schroeder as an intermediary. It's definitely a sign that Russia wants to negotiate. It's always a kind of outstretched hand. Of course, Schroeder would be a reasonable choice because he has access to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. Putin, and because he also belongs to a party that is part of the German government," she said in an interview with the YouTube channel Overtone Magazin.

According to the politician, the German federal government and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz himself are not seeking to find a mediator for negotiations with Russia. Wagenknecht called this trend dangerous.

On May 9, Putin nominated Schroeder as Europe's preferred negotiator for contacts with Moscow. Later, on May 29, he explained the candidacy of the ex-Chancellor of Germany by saying that he "can be trusted."

However, the proposal, according to Deutschlandfunk radio station, was rejected by the current German authorities. Later, the involvement of Schroeder in the negotiations was ruled out by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas. Instead of the former German chancellor, she offered herself, which was criticized in the European Union (EU).

On May 29, Putin, answering a question from Izvestia, clarified that the EU negotiator should be chosen by his representatives themselves, as they do it for themselves.
