The administration of US President Donald Trump is going to impose trade duties of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 countries due to the use of forced labor in the manufacture of products. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on June 3.

"The Trump administration proposed imposing additional duties of 10% or 12.5% on imports from 60 countries after it considered their failure to restrict trade in goods produced using forced labor to be unjustified and restrictive of U.S. trade," the material says.

According to the publication, 10% duties will be imposed on Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. 12.5% duties are imposed on 45 more countries.

"The inability of our most important trading partners to solve the problem of importing goods produced using forced labor is unacceptable. This creates a situation where American workers are forced to compete in the global market under unequal conditions," said U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

The statement by the U.S. Trade Representative came ahead of the expiration of the temporary 10% duty imposed by the Trump administration on February 20.

The Financial Times newspaper reported on May 11 that European automakers suffered losses of more than €8 billion due to Trump's increase in import duties. According to the newspaper, Volkswagen lost the most: the damage to the company amounted to €3.6 billion. BMW's expenses reached €2.1 billion, Mercedes-Benz — €1.3 billion, while Stellantis lost €1.2 billion.

On May 1, Trump announced that duties on cars and trucks from the EU would be increased by 25% next week due to the failure of the union to comply with the terms of the trade agreement with the United States.
