The opening of the first negotiation cluster on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the European Union (EU) is scheduled for June 15 at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 2, citing three European diplomats.

"Hungary has made it clear that it will abandon its long—standing opposition to Ukraine's bid for EU membership, which will allow it and Moldova to begin formal negotiations on joining the bloc in the coming days," the article says.

The authors of the article explain that both countries applied for membership at the same time, which means that Moldova's application can only move forward if Ukraine's application is also accepted. The previous Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban opposed Ukraine's inclusion in the EU. However, the new leadership of the country has privately made it clear that it is ready to lift the veto after a meeting of Ukrainian and Hungarian experts on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

At the same time, an anonymous Hungarian official told the newspaper that "no decision" has yet been made on the opening of clusters for Ukraine. Another diplomat said that Kiev should present its plans for internal reforms and consider the issue of minorities. After that, the ambassadors of the EU countries will finally determine their position on the opening of the first cluster for Ukraine and Moldova. Next, the EU countries will approve the opening of the cluster for both candidates at an intergovernmental conference on June 15.
