- The Foreign Ministry announced Britain's preparations for a "head-on collision" with Russia
The UK is preparing for a "head-on collision" with Russia and is trying to prevent a detente between Moscow and Washington. This was announced on June 2 by Alexander Gusarov, Director of the North Atlantic Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"Having achieved the rejection of a negotiated settlement from their Kiev clients in the spring of 2022, London consistently and demonstratively, almost with gusto, raised the stakes in the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, and recently they have also been inciting the Europeans to reckless militarization and preparations for a head—on collision with Russia," he said in an interview with the magazineInternational life".
According to Gusarov, the British authorities are trying to preserve the existing dividing lines in Europe and prevent the reduction of tensions between Russia and the United States. At the same time, as the diplomat noted, London itself does not have sufficient economic and military resources to directly participate in such a confrontation and will not "climb into hell."
Despite the existing differences, Russia continues to maintain diplomatic contacts with the UK, Gusarov assured.
"Under these conditions, we maintain diplomatic channels of communication with the British side, but their potential, admittedly, is seriously limited by the destructive attitudes of London, which they are still unable to abandon without losing face," the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.
Speaking about relations with the United States, Gusarov said that after the arrival of American President Donald Trump, a more pragmatic format of interaction appeared in Washington. According to him, the parties have already held a number of useful contacts, including high-level talks.
"We are ready to move along [the path of restoring relations with the United States], provided that both sides adhere to the basic principles of respect for each other's interests, mutual benefit and non—interference in internal affairs," the diplomat said.
Gusarov also said that the dialogue between the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US State Department on the elimination of accumulated problems continues on a regular basis. The next meeting of relevant experts, as the diplomat said, took place a week ago.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the parties have already managed to stabilize the work of diplomatic missions in both countries. At the same time, Moscow continues to seek the return of the confiscated diplomatic property and the restoration of direct flights between the two countries.
On May 26, the United Kingdom expanded the anti-Russian sanctions list by 18 positions. The Eurasian Savings Bank and real estate companies Diamant Estate are subject to restrictions. In addition, the sanctions affected companies from El Salvador and Georgia.
At the same time, the Russian Embassy in London stated that the new restrictions on London were far-fetched and meaningless. The diplomatic mission noted that the UK's anti-Russian policy will not affect the course of the Russian Federation, which has successfully adapted to external pressure. At the same time, the consequences of sanctions will primarily affect British citizens, businesses and the reputation of the United Kingdom, the diplomats assured.
