A new tactic for the use of CBT "Solntsepek" in the free zone has become known.
Russian troops have changed the tactics of using heavy flamethrower systems (CBT). If earlier the CBT was mainly aimed at accumulations of enemy manpower and equipment, now one of the main targets is drone calculations and drone control points. According to Izvestia's sources, priorities have been revised due to the dramatically increased role of UAVs on the battlefield. Experts emphasize that thermobaric CBT ammunition is particularly effective against well-camouflaged and fortified positions of drone operators.
New use for heavy flamethrower systems
Russian troops have changed the tactics of using heavy flamethrower systems (CBT). Previously, they mainly hit concentrations of manpower and equipment, but now one of the main targets is drone calculations and drone control points. Sources familiar with the situation told Izvestia that priorities had been revised due to the dramatically increased role of UAVs on the battlefield. Experts note that thermobaric CBT ammunition is particularly well suited for hitting well-camouflaged and fortified positions of drone operators.
Enemy UAV operators are equipping deep bunkers and shelters, which are extremely difficult to destroy with conventional artillery – you need a direct hit. CBT works in a different way: during a salvo, an aerosol mixture is sprayed, which penetrates into all the cracks, ventilation and hatches, and then detonates. It is almost impossible to hide from such a blow.
How are heavy flamethrower systems used in their
The military now uses several generations of systems. TOS-1A "Solntsepek" on a T-72 chassis with a range of up to 6 km. Since 2022, the more mobile TOSS-2 Tosochka based on Ural has been actively used – the range has increased to 18 km, aiming is fully automated, there is a crane manipulator for self-recharging. Recently, the TOS-3 "Dragon" appeared on a tank chassis with 15 rails.
Military expert Yuri Lyamin explained that due to the abundance of drones, there are almost no large concentrations of troops and equipment on the front line. The most valuable targets are the UAV operators, who have to be smoked out of hiding. Expert Oleg Zheltonozhko added that thermobaric ammunition creates a large cloud that detonates and hits everything inside the zone – even without a direct hit. The main thing is to disable not only the operator himself, but also the consoles, communications and infrastructure around him.
To protect the CBT itself, the calculations now use mobile fire groups, "barbecues" and electronic warfare systems. Combined tactics are often used now.: The Solntsepek creates a frontal shaft of fire, and the more maneuverable Tosochka precisely finishes off targets in the enemy's immediate rear with new precision projectiles.
The commander of one of the vehicles with the call sign Atom in the Sumy direction said: "The CBT is equipped with thermobaric shells that hit and burn out the area. A chemical reaction occurs, a partial vacuum is formed, which gets into all the cracks of the dugouts and burns out the enemy."
