Using tires with a low profile (50% or lower), and as a result, a larger diameter disc, entails a number of disadvantages. Experts of the Cordiant holding told Izvestia about this on June 2.

So, according to experts, when using low-profile tires, there is a high risk of damage to the tire and disc when hitting a road obstacle. Driving comfort also deteriorates, as the tire is unable to absorb road bumps due to the height of the profile.

"Unsprung masses increase — this also reduces comfort, especially on uneven roads. In particular, the undercarriage parts of the car are more heavily loaded, as a result of which their service life decreases. Acceleration dynamics on low—power vehicles when using large-diameter wheels is also deteriorating," the holding noted.

However, low-profile tires are highly controllable on flat roads. The lower the profile of the tire, that is, its height from the edge of the disc to the outer edge of the wheel, the sharper the responses to steering and better feedback, as a result of which the car becomes more collected and obedient, especially when actively maneuvering, they said.

As experts have noted, it is necessary to take into account that the larger the diameter of the wheel, the higher the cost of the discs, the tire itself and tire repair work. Also, not every workshop will be able to perform high-quality tire installation with a low profile.

At the same time, tires with a high profile (60% or higher) are characterized by smooth running: small bumps in the roadway are absorbed by the shock absorption of the tire itself, rather than the suspension. Impacts from large bumps, such as the joints of overpasses, are also more effectively extinguished. This makes the car feel more comfortable and smooth, but at the same time less responsive to the driver's actions.

"Low-profile tires have a number of special features in operation and are recommended only to those drivers who use the car mainly on flat roads and are willing to put up with all their disadvantages in favor of good handling. At the same time, on low-quality roads and in winter, it is more logical to use tires with a higher profile and a smaller diameter, since low-profile tires can cause problems when the roadway presents unexpected surprises in the form of holes and potholes with sharp edges, and on snow and slippery surfaces they will not be able to fully reach their potential." — added to Cordiant.

On May 15, experts said that car tires are a technically complex product, the properties of which change over time.: the level of traction decreases, the risk of aquaplaning increases, as well as noise during movement.
