After the age of 40, many women notice that their teeth become more sensitive, gum inflammation occurs more often, and habitual care no longer gives the same result. One of the main reasons for such changes is related to hormonal changes in the body during menopause. Maxim Labukhin, medical director of the MIA.RF network of dental clinics, told Izvestia about this on June 5.

According to the expert, a decrease in estrogen levels affects not only the reproductive system, but also the condition of the oral cavity. Deficiency of these hormones leads to disruption of bone tissue renewal processes, which increases the risk of osteoporosis, and with it tooth mobility and thinning of the jaw bone.

"Hormonal changes weaken the local immunity of the oral cavity. As a result, the gums become more vulnerable to inflammation, and the likelihood of periodontitis, a disease of the tissues surrounding the tooth, increases. An additional risk factor is a decrease in saliva production. Due to dry mouth, favorable conditions are created for the reproduction of bacteria, which contributes to the development of caries and other dental problems," explained Labukhin.

The expert noted that during this period, many women face increased sensitivity of their teeth to hot and cold food, bleeding gums and exposed teeth necks. After menopause, the prevalence of periodontitis increases significantly. If this disease occurs in about one in four women before the age of 40, then in postmenopause it is already diagnosed in more than two thirds of patients.

Vitamin D deficiency has an additional effect, which is often found in women over 45 years of age. A lack of this vitamin worsens the condition of bone tissue and increases the risk of tooth loss.

To maintain oral health after the age of 40, the doctor recommends paying special attention to prevention. Daily care should include a soft toothbrush, fluoride pastes and an irrigator. It is also important to maintain sufficient hydration of the mucous membrane, drink more water and, if necessary, use special products to combat dry mouth.

Nutrition is of particular importance. The diet should contain a sufficient amount of calcium, which is rich in dairy products, nuts and some types of fish. To maintain vitamin D levels, it is recommended to include fatty fish and eggs in the menu, and if necessary, take vitamin supplements as prescribed by a doctor.

Labukhin stressed that it is advisable to start preparing for age-related changes in advance. At the age of about 30 years, it is important to treat caries in a timely manner, change old fillings, eliminate inflammatory gum diseases and regularly undergo preventive examinations at the dentist. In addition, physical activity, a balanced diet and vitamin D control contribute to maintaining bone health.

According to the specialist, menopause does not necessarily have to be accompanied by serious dental problems. With proper care, regular medical supervision and timely prevention, risks can be significantly reduced and dental health can be maintained for many years to come.

On May 8, Labukhin said that aligners have become one of the most popular technologies in modern orthodontics due to their aesthetics and convenience. Transparent mouth guards are almost invisible on the teeth and allow you to adjust the bite without using metal structures.
