Yuri Semin was named the best football coach of the 21st century
Yuri Semin was recognized as the best coach in Russia in the first quarter of the 21st century. The voting among sports journalists and commentators was conducted by the newspaper Sport-Express, the leader was determined by counting the last votes. Pavel Matveev, a correspondent for Izvestia, told us what merits and achievements played a decisive role.
"It was an incredibly successful 25th anniversary for us, because European cups were won, the national team played great at the World Cup and the European Championship, there were local high-profile victories in the Champions League, in the most prestigious tournament," said Ilya Kazakov, the host of the Football of Russia TV program.
Sports journalist Viktor Gusev explained that each coach has his own team: one can get very weak players and reach the top with them, while the other, a not very capable coach, will get stars, but this rarely happens.
Kurban Berdyev, who beat Barcelona with Rubin Kazan, is in third place in the rating. On the second line is Valery Gazzaev, under whose leadership CSKA became the first in the history of modern Russia to win the UEFA Cup. Most experts put Yuri Semin in the first place, who led Lokomotiv to the championship in Russia three times and beat Real Madrid dry.
Igor Rabiner, a columnist for Sport-Express, noted that apart from Semin, no one has ever become a champion with Lokomotiv. According to him, the team, which is almost 100 years old, became the champion of Russia three times, and all three times — under the leadership of Semin.
The honored coach of the RSFSR, Yuri Semin, thanked the journalists for their appreciation.
"I call all the journalists my colleagues because we have been working for a long, long time. They know football well, they know me well. Thanks a lot to them too. As for me, I probably worked well during this period, I did my job well," Semin said.
On June 1, the Moscow football club (FC) CSKA approved Dmitry Igdisamov as the head coach of the team. The specialist signed a two-year contract. The agreement provides for an extension option for another period of time. Igdisamov led the main team in the interim status after Fabio Celestini's dismissal, which took place on Monday, May 4.
