One of the most famous miracles associated with the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God occurred in 1155, when Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky transported the shrine from Vyshgorod to Vladimir Land, Natalia Fominykh, a religious scholar, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, professor at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, told Izvestia.

According to church tradition, not far from the Klyazma River, the horses carrying the icon suddenly stopped and could not continue their journey even after they were harnessed. Amazed by what had happened, Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky fell before the image of the Mother of God and began to pray fervently.

According to legend, the Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him with a scroll in his hand and ordered him to leave His icon in Vladimir, and build a temple in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos at the site of the apparition. After that, the prince founded his residence there — Bogolyubovo — and erected a white-stone temple, where the shrine stayed for some time. Later, he built the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir and moved the image there.

The expert also recalled that the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is revered as the patroness of the Russian land, and church tradition correlates many of the miracles associated with it with important historical events.

"There are many such military stories. According to church tradition, the intercession of the Vladimir Icon is associated with the events of 1451, when Tsarevich Mazovia's troops retreated from Moscow, with the Stand on the Ugra in 1480, after which the army of Khan Akhmat retreated, as well as with the liberation of Moscow from the invasion of the Crimean Khan Mehmed Giray in 1521," Natalia Fominykh noted.

Another of the most famous miracles of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in the church tradition is considered to be the salvation of Russia from the invasion of Tamerlane in 1395. When the conqueror's troops approached the Russian borders, Grand Duke Vasily Dmitrievich ordered the shrine to be moved from Vladimir to Moscow and called the people to prayer. According to legend, at this time Tamerlane saw the Mother of God in a dream surrounded by a heavenly host, after which he refused to continue the campaign and withdrew his troops. In memory of this event, the Sretensky Monastery was later founded in Moscow.
