The expert reported on the causes of drowsiness when taking medications
The main drugs that can cause drowsiness include first-generation antihistamines, benzodiazepines, some antidepressants, centrally acting muscle relaxants, antiepileptic drugs and opioid analgesics, said Galina Chudinskaya, a neurologist at Meditsina JSC (Academician Roitberg Clinic) on June 1. "Газете.Ru ".
According to the expert, drowsiness occurs when the drug passes through the blood—brain barrier and affects neurotransmitters, substances responsible for transmitting signals between nerve cells.
"First—generation antihistamines (diphenhydramine, suprastin, tavegil) block not only histamine, but also cholinergic receptors in the reticular formation of the brain stem, the area responsible for wakefulness. Benzodiazepines (diazepam, zolpidem, zopiclone) enhance the action of GABA, the main inhibitory mediator of the central nervous system (CNS). The neurons "slow down", relaxation and drowsiness occur," the doctor said.
She clarified that severe drowsiness may increase over the age of 65, when taking several medications at the same time, as well as with liver and kidney disorders, alcohol consumption and individual sensitivity.
"It is possible to reduce drowsiness without discontinuing the drug if you act consistently. If the drug does not require a strict schedule, take it in the evening, 1-2 hours before bedtime," the doctor concluded.
Roszdravnadzor announced on May 28 that the Russian Ministry of Health is developing a bill that would exclude the possibility of buying prescription drugs without an electronic prescription. The head of the department, Alla Samoilova, noted that currently there are cases of such drugs being sold without a doctor's prescription. According to her, the new initiative is aimed at strengthening control over the turnover of prescription drugs.
